Danish director Martin De Thurah, was in México for a couple of weeks to shoot ‘The Bad In Each Other’, the latest track from ‘Metals’, the 4th studio album by Canadian artist, Feist.
Martin, Feist and The Lift spent 5 days prepping and shooting the film, culminating in a piece of work which has immense depth, stunning cinematography and an overall superlative craft. It was Martin’s first visit to Mexico, and he found the place, the people and the job all very enjoyable.
Aside from shooting the promo, Martin also put on a small screening of some of his other work.
Martin and the A+/Academy crew are welcome back any time – it was a pleasure to have them!
Martin told us about his experience.
How did the project come about?
Feist contacted me to shoot a video, but at the time I couldn’t work on it because of my schedule. We stayed in contact however, and another opportunity arose soon after. That opportunity was ‘The Bad in Each Other’.
How did you come up with the idea for the video?
Initially it was 4 main stories, or ideas, but that evolved into something much bigger, and consequently, with far greater depth.
How do you prepare for making a video?
Firstly, I have to like the music. It has to resonate with me. I have tried in the past to compromise, but those projects were very difficult to pull off. Then again, a track came in a few years ago that I wasn’t that keen on, but I made the video anyway. It went on to be a huge hit, something that was possibly down to the strength of the video – it became something different and it enhanced the track!
Do you prefer videos or movies?
I like to do both - movies and videos. Long and short. And aside of that i like smaller projects - i like to draw, design a book cover or create an album sleeve, things like that. I used to be a painter so graphic imagery interests me. I like these things because they are intricate and intimate – I can take my time over them.
And then this free way of exploring a place, like with this video – having some ideas and coming out to Mexico to make them happen.
How was the experience of working on this project?
The Lift were amazing. We had a huge cast, many of whom were non actors - we found some amazing characters. We found great locations and while it was a 5 day shoot, it felt more like a full blown feature film. It was an amazing experience to film here - one which I hope to repeat sometime soon!

El director danés, Martin De Thurah, estuvo en México por unos días para grabar dos videos para la cantante canadiense Feist, quien estuvo en nuestro país, para presentar su último material, Metals. The Lift, De Thurah y Feist, tuvieron cinco días de trabajo y filmaciones, durante lo cuales unieron fuerzas para lograr un trabajo de calidad.
En su primera visita a la República Mexicana, el maestro De Thurah admite haber disfrutado enormemente tanto de la gente como de su trabajo. Además de involucrarse con el proyecto de Feist, el reconocido director compartió con un grupo de personas parte de su labor en una pequeña proyección, con la cual le abre las puertas en nuestro país a futuros proyectos de los que sabremos muy pronto. Esperamos tenerlo de vuelta en poco tiempo y poder disfrutar de sus nuevas locuras.
TL: ¿Cómo comenzó este proyecto?
MdT: Feist me contactó para hacerle un video que no pude realizar por cuestiones de tiempo, pero nos mantuvimos hablando hasta que se concretó la realización de ‘The Bad In Each Other’.
¿Cómo surgió la idea para el video?
Yo tenia cuatro pequeñas ideas bocetadas, pero al final, terminamos haciendo casi una película.
¿Cómo te preparas para hacer un video?
Me encanta la música, de otro modo, sería muy difícil para mi hacer videos. Miles de veces he tratado de no meter mis gustos musicales en mi trabajo, porque no siempre son buenos, de hecho, en una ocasión hice un video para una canción que, aunque no era mala, no me gustaba mucho, pero al final, al combinarla con las imágenes, el resultado fue sorprendente, pues un buen video hizo que la música sonara mucho mejor.
¿Prefieres los videos o las películas?
Me gustan las dos cosas, la realidad es que a veces prefiero las artes gráficas, hacer portadas para CD’s o libros, eso me encanta porque antes era pintor y me gusta esa sensación de poder hacer las cosas con tranquilidad, con tiempo y de una manera más íntima, aunque a veces también es bueno hacer proyectos duraderos o sólo tener una idea y poder salir y realizarla.
¿Cómo fue trabajar en este proyecto?
Trabajamos con mucho corazón, además, The Lift se encargó de darnos todo lo que necesitábamos, pusimos mucha atención desde el casting, porque tuvimos un elenco muy grande y yo quería gente real, y creo que logramos un buen resultado porque encontramos personajes increíbles, además, fueron cinco días de rodaje, muchísimo para un video, fue como hacer una pequeña película y, por supuesto, una gran experiencia.
